Addressing Employee Relations And Human Resource Management
Addressing Employee Relations As she sat in her office in Winnipeg, Britney MacPherson thumbed through a textbook on human resource management. As manager of the Winnipeg location of Maple Leaf Shoes, she was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility. However, Britney was finding her job particularly challengingââ¬âalthough she had a B.Com., which she received in 1994 from a well-known Ontario university, her training had been focused on accounting and finance and she had had only one course in human resource management. Things were unravelling in Winnipeg, and Britney knew that she needed help. Unfortunately, her phone calls and emails to head office in Wilmington, Ontario, brought little assistance. The company policy regarding employee communications was quite simple: ââ¬Å"What goes on at the company stays at the company.â⬠This policy was communicated regularly to all employees. However, Joan Jorgenson, a clerk in the office, had violated this policy. A couple of weeks ago, Joan had struck up a conversation with a coworker, Natalie King. During their talk, Natalie had mentioned that she had recently moved from Wilmington to Winnipeg, because, according to Natalie, a senior member of management in the Wilmington office had become enraged when Natalie refused his sexual advances. He had threatened Natalie with dismissal, but after a short discussion an agreement was reached that Natalie would move to the Winnipeg location. Joan became enraged when she heard NatalieShow MoreRelatedThe Importance of an Organizations Performance Management System1538 Words à |à 7 Pagessystematic and purposeful. Comparative Essay Leadership Lord of the Flies and Animal...
Comparative essay: Leadership in Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm Essay question: You are required to write a comparative essay. You should compare one aspect of the texts such as theme, conflict, character or relationship. The texts are ââ¬ËLord of the Fliesââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËAnimal Farmââ¬â¢. The two books, Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm circle around the themes of power, leadership, law, disorder, good and evil. On a personal level, these themes come up in the way people relate to each other: How they interact, who becomes a follower, a manipulator, who takes responsibility, who becomes a victim and who a perpetrator. In the two books both Jack and Napoleon stick out as having so called leadership qualities. Leadership, as shown inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Signaling that he is tough enough to survive on his own, he presents himself to the others as a strong personality. This makes Jack attractive to the other boys, who want to join the self confident, courageous and enthusiastic boy. I shall take a few hunters with me and bring back meat. ââ¬Å"(pg. 177) Jack gives clear instructions and tries to build up cooperation within the tribe. Napoleon, in Animal Farm, is a large, rather fierce looking Berkshire boar. He has only one rival: Snowball, who acts as the chief of Animal Farm. In the United States control of air pollution is chiefly the responsibility of the states and local government all the states have air quality management programs which are patterned after Federal Laws. The basics federal law dealing, with air pollution is the clean air act of 1970. The act was last amended in 1990, under this law the Federal Environment Protection set standards for air quality the Agency also place limits on the amounts, of pollutant that could be given off by cars. The Contributors And Their Contributions To Modern Security Essay Example For Students
The Contributors And Their Contributions To Modern Security Essay The Contributors and their Contributions to Modern SecurityThe need for security has been around since the beginning of recorded time. Many came together in an effort to protect themselves and their belongings, from such threats as animals, weather and other humans. This grouping also made it easier to find food and satisfy their need for socialization. They donned weapons, erected walls, built barriers, and made laws, in an attempt to shield themselves from danger and fear. Humans evolved, as did their types of security, weaponry and barriers. Often, rulers selected individuals to aid in the enforcement of laws, as well as provide security for the ruler himself. Many of those individuals were men chosen from the military, which were often ruthless, and dangerous. The Romans relied upon the military force of the legions. To place the military on a stable foundation and disperse the power that the legions held, Augustus, the Emperor of Rome, created The Praetorian Guard, a type of bod yguard police, The Urban Cohorts, which were comprised of soldiers with police and military duties. Also, The Vigiles, large groups of firefighter police. In exchange, the Serfs received food and security from the noblemen. Anglo-Saxons brought the idea of mutual responsibility for protection of individuals. Tithings, a Grouping of ten families, collectively assumed responsibility for maintaining law and order. The tithing system was later replaced with the Frankpledge system after the Norman Conquest. The Frankpledge system demanded that all free Englishman swear to keep the peace. The Magna Charta, challenged the feudal system during King Johnââ¬â¢s reign as his lords revolted and forced him to sign, giving all Englishmen ââ¬Å"due processâ⬠of law. The Magna Charta is the basis for modern justice. The Statute of Westminster formalized the practice in criminal justice and apprehension of criminals. The watch and ward system required townsmen to patrol the cities during the night, while the constables patrolled during the day. Those who did not serve were placed in the stocks. The hue and cry system served as alarm for the citizens of the town or city. When a criminal resisted the watchman cried out and the people of the town came to his aid. Enforcement of the hue and cry was brought about by the assize of arms, which required every male between fifteen and sixty years of age to keep a weapon in the home as a ââ¬Å"harness to keep the peace.â⬠Many merchants were not satisfied with the quality of the protection provided them, therefore they hired private police. These private police guarded their businesses, investigated crimes, and recovered stolen property. Oliver Cromwell attempted to use his army as a police force as a means of crime prevention. There was no effective police mechanism between the people and his army. Therefore, the people resisted and the watch and ward system remained the primary crime control procedure until the industrial revolution. The Industrial Revolution of England brought about many changes. Famine hit the rural community, forcing many into the cities to find jobs at mills and factories. Crime intensified within the cities brought on by the countless poverty stricken people trying to survive. Furthermore, Political extremists triggered angry mobs, which caused riots. Because there was no organized police to handle riots, a magistrate ordered the ââ¬Å"Riot Actâ⬠and called in the military. In London, 1748 Henry Fielding was made the Chief Magistrate of Bow Street. During this period of time there was no police force. He was known for his leniency in dealing with petty theft. He also wrote and published pamphlets about the poverty in London, and the causes of the rising crime. Fielding envisioned an idea that the p eople may join forces, go out into the streets, and stop crime before it had a chance to cause ruin. .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 , .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .postImageUrl , .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 , .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53:hover , .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53:visited , .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53:active { border:0!important; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53:active , .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53 .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1c3d3dd0c74cbcda8b95d3ae8a07db53:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Bioethics EssayFielding chose six men to form a volunteer force. These men ââ¬Å"swept cleanâ⬠the Bow Street area. Many were arrested, and the rest fled from the neighborhood. Even after Henry Fieldingââ¬â¢s death, his brother John carried on his ideas. The Bow Street volunteers eventually became a professional outfit known as the Bow Street Runners, the first detective agency in England. In 1785, William Pitt proposed a bill to establish a strong police force, to act through out the city. The bill was rejected by the press, the public and the justices and was defeated. Another attempt at reform in 1792, his Middlesex Justice bill established seven public offices, each having three paid magistrates, and six paid constables. Patrick Colquhoun was one of the magistrates under Pittââ¬â¢s Justice bill. Colquhoun offered ââ¬Å" A Treatise on the Police of Metropolisâ⬠and showed startling statistics pointing out the need for a large police force, and also believed in separating the police from judicial power. His treatise was a milestone in using statistics in correlation with crime. Sir Robert Peel, ââ¬Å"the father of modern policingâ⬠, originated the Metropolitan Police of London in 1829. The police were appointed and paid by the city, and their objective was to be the prevention of crime. Sir Robert Peel had nine principles regarding the police:? The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder. ? The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions. ? Police must secure the willing co-operation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public. ? The degree of co-operation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to the necessity of the use of physical force. ? Police seek and preserve public favour not by catering to public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law. ? Police use physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only when the exercise of persuasion, advice and warning is found to be insufficient. ? Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention t o duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence. ? Police should always direct their action strictly towards their functions and never appear to usurp the powers of the judiciary. ? The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it. Although the objective was on crime prevention, the focus eventually turned to investigation and apprehension of criminals. Therefore, the need for private police was still great. Allen Pinkerton was one of the developers of the railroad police, as well as contract security forces. He was appointed the deputy sheriff of Cook County, and in 1843, Chicagoââ¬â¢s first detective. Pinkerton later resigned his position due to economic pressure. He then started the Pinkerton National Detective agency, and focused on apprehending railroad criminals, and setting up security systems for railroads. During the Civil War, Pinkerton was called on by President Lincoln to establish a secret service department, where he did intelligence work for the Union Army. In the 1860ââ¬â¢s and 70ââ¬â¢s Pinkertonââ¬â¢s agency received National attention by apprehending train robbers and bandits. Currently Pinkerton Inc. is the largest private security organization in the U.S. It became a public corporation in 1965 and continues to grow annually. *Quotes taken from Introduction to Private Security And Introduction to Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice 6th ed. by Karen M. Poetry and its Power Essays - Diospyros, Persimmon, Emotion
Poetry and its Power Essays - Diospyros, Persimmon, Emotion Poetry and its Power English 002 Online Professor Cobene Essay 4 Poetry and its Power There is a significant power in all poetry. There is symbolism and power in the words. Poetry creates and gives us all the power of what we cannot say or may not want to say. Instead, we use poetry to convey our loves, or wants and desires, and all of our innermost feelings and thoughts that we normally cannot divulge or say to people in normal writings or settings. Poetry becomes the vehicle by which we can use to move people through our thoughts, feelings, experiences, and lives, and we can tell our story of our journeys along the way. Jane Hirschfield, author and poet of Poetry and the Mind of Concentration puts six central realms or energies onto what lies beneath poetry. In the exploration of poetry, Hirschfield explains that there are six realms that poetry can be put into: music, image, emotion, sound, rhetoric, and voice. Here, we eliminate music and voice, although they are not totally void in these poems, but we focus more on image, emotion, sound, and rhetoric. In the poetry by Li-Young Lee, Persimmons, we find the imagery of a fruit, the persimmon with its taste and look. The author Lee, gives us a vivid rendition of the fruit, by saying what it looks like, what it might smell like, and what it is. Lee writes about ripe persimmons as being soft and brown spotted. He also writes about how they are sweet and fragrant, and how you eat the fruit. There is a joy in this fruit because it invokes images of being sweet, ripe, and smelling good. Lee then goes on to talk about Donna, a woman lying in the grass with him, who is also sweet and smells good. Lee goes on to talk about watching his mother tie yarn, and make animals out of the yarn. Lee talks about how his mother said every persimmon has a sun inside, and we can see the images of a persimmon looking like it has a sun inside of it, in our heads. Lee talks about his father, and him holding the persimmons, and we can see this image as well. We can see Lee in the cellar rummaging through, look ing for different things in his cellar. In the poetry by Debra Allbery, Chronictown, we can see a young girl affected by the fact that she has had to deal with adversity growing up, because those images are described so vividly. Our imagination goes to what Allbery is writing, and we can see every word she is writing. We can hear the metal rattle of the elevator freight lift in her building, and we can see the mattresses on the floor, because it takes our minds there. Allbery wants us to see the life she was living, how she grew up, and what experiences she had had. The poetry by Allbery leads our imaginations to see green floors and walls. This is where the poet wants our minds to go with the imagery. I think that both Lee and Allbery are using imagery to talk about times of their pasts. I think they are outlining or detailing their experiences, and wanting us to share in them, so they are sharing them with us. They are making us see what their lives were like, when they were little, or when they were growing up. For Lee, I think the most important things to him are remembering his times growing up, his mother, his father, and his love or maybe even first love, and comparing a sweet life to sweet fruit. Allbery shows us a different life, one that was close to the nurses and the ill and the sick. In other works, I believe Allbery is showing us the imagery of the hospitals clinics, saying that she then got over that, grew up, and here she is. I think the Allberys works could center on overcoming what was, and Lees work could focus on becoming who he is, from what was. I see the emotion in both of the poems by Lee and Allbery as emotion from the past of emotion from growing

Since 2013, she has represented the state of Massachusetts in the United States Senate, affiliated with the Democratic Party. In 2019, she became a candidate for President of the United States. Fast Facts: Senator Elizabeth Warren Known For: A prominent Democratic politician of the late 2010s, Warren had a previous career as one of the top legal scholars in the country.Occupation: United States Senator from Massachusetts; previously a professor of lawBorn: June 22, 1949 in Oklahoma City, OklahomaSpouse(s): Jim Warren (m. 1968-1978), Bruce H. Mann (m. 1980).Children: Amelia Warren Tyagi (b. 1971), Alexander Warren (b. 1976) Early Life and Education Elizabeth Warren (nà ©e Elizabeth Ann Herring) was born in Oklahoma City, the fourth child and first daughter of Donald and Pauline Herring. Their family was lower-middle class and often struggled to make ends meet. Things worsened when Warren was twelve and her father, a salesman, had a heart attack, leaving him unable to do his job. Warren started her first job- waitressing- at age thirteen in order to help make ends meet. In high school, Warren was a star of the debate team. She won Oklahomaââ¬â¢s state high school debating championship when she was sixteen and earned a debate scholarship to attend George Washington University. At the time, she intended to study to become a teacher. However, after two years of studies, she dropped out to marry Jim Warren, whom she had known since high school. The couple married in 1968, when Warren was nineteen. Law School and Teaching Career When Warren and her husband moved to Texas for his job with IBM, she enrolled at the University of Texas, where she studied speech pathology and audiology. However, they moved to New Jersey soon after on another of Jim Warrenââ¬â¢s job transfers, and when she became pregnant, she chose to stay at home with their daughter Amelia. In 1973, Warren enrolled in Rutgers Law School. She graduated in 1976 and passed the bar exam; that same year, the Warrensââ¬â¢ son Alexander was born. Two years later, in 1978, Warren and her husband divorced. She chose to keep his last name, even after she remarried in 1980 to Bruce Mann. For the first year or so of her career, Warren did not actively practice law in a law firm, instead teaching children with disabilities in a public school. She also worked from home doing minor legal work such as wills and real estate filings. Warren returned to her alma mater in 1977 as a lecturer at Rutgers. She remained there for one academic year, then moved back to Texas to take a job at the University of Houston Law Center, where she worked from 1978 to 1983 as the associate dean for academic affairs. In 1981, she spent some time as a visiting associate professor at the University of Texas Law School; she returned from 1983 to 1987 as a full professor. Legal Scholar From the beginning of her career, Warren often focused her work and research on how real people interact with the law in their daily lives, with a particular emphasis on bankruptcy law. Her research made her a respected rising star in her field, and she continued her work throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1987, Warren joined the University of Pennsylvania Law School as a full professor in 1987 and in 1990, she became the William A. Schnader Professor of Commercial Law. She taught for a year at Harvard Law School in 1992 as Robert Braucher Visiting Professor of Commercial Law. Three years later, Warren returned to Harvard full-time, joining the faculty full-time as the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law. Warrenââ¬â¢s position made her the first tenured Harvard law professor who had gotten a law degree from an American public university. Over time, she became one of the most prominent legal scholars in bankruptcy and commercial law, with a large number of publications to her name. It was in that capacity that she was asked, in 1995, to advise the National Bankruptcy Review Commission. At the time, her recommendations failed to convince Congress, and her advocacy failed, but her work helped lead to the establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was signed into law in 2010. Political Career Although Warren was a registered Republican until the 1990s, she shifted to the Democratic Party during that decade. It wasnââ¬â¢t until 2011, however, that she began her political career in earnest. That year, she announced her candidacy for the 2012 Senate election in Massachusetts, running as a Democrat to unseat Republican incumbent Scott Brown. Her breakout moment came with a September 2011 speech that went viral, in which she argued against the idea that taxing the wealthy is class warfare. In her response, she argued that no one becomes rich without leaning on the rest of society, from workers to infrastructure to education and more, and that the social contract of a civilized society means that those who have benefited from the system invest in it again to help the next people who want to do the same. Warren won the election with nearly 54 percent of the vote and quickly became a star in the Democratic Party. Her committee assignment was the Senate Banking Committee, given her extensive experience in economics. Soon, she gained a reputation for her unforgiving questioning of big banking executives and regulators. Senator Elizabeth Warren also introduced a bill that would allow students to borrow from the government at the same rate as banks. In 2015, she co-sponsored legislation along with Republican and independent senators that was built on the Banking Act of 1933 and intended to reduce the likelihood of future financial crises. Leading Opposition and Running for President Following the 2016 election of Republican Donald Trump to the presidency, Warren became an outspoken critic of his administration. A defining moment occurred during the confirmation hearing for Jeff Sessions, a Republican senator nominated for attorney general. Warren attempted to read a letter aloud that Coretta Scott King had written years earlier, arguing that Sessions used his powers to suppress black voters. Warren was stopped and censured by the Republican majority; she read the letter aloud on an Internet livestream instead. In his censure, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, ââ¬Å"[Warren] was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.â⬠The statement entered the pop culture lexicon and became a rallying cry for womenââ¬â¢s movements. Senator Warren has opposed many of the Trump administrationââ¬â¢s policies and has also spoken publicly about perceived conflicts of interest and misconduct by Trump himself. Warren has also been embroiled in her own headline-making scandal stemming from her claims to Native American heritage, which she repeated over the course of several years. When Warren took a DNA test that confirmed the presence of a Native ancestor, the controversy was compounded by tribal leadersââ¬â¢ criticism of using a DNA test results as a way of claiming Native American identity. Warren apologized for her handling of the controversy and clarified that she understands the difference between ancestry and actual tribal membership. In 2018, Warren won re-election by a landslide, taking 60% of the vote. Soon afterwards, news broke that she had formed an exploratory committee to run for president in 2020; she confirmed her candidacy in February 2019. Her platform is based on transparent policy proposals and a coalition of working class, union workers, women, and immigrants, and she positions herself as a direct contrast to the Trump-led Republican party of the current era. The Role of Washington Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
The Role of Washington - Coursework Example State sovereignty is usually under threat from the federalââ¬â¢s influential role in stirring state policies and initiatives (Cropf, 2008). In essence, the federal government is legally obliged to provide general funding to all states. However, the federal government bargains for excess power by attaching funding with regulations. Quite often, failure of compliance with federal regulations jeopardizes a stateââ¬â¢s possibility of receiving full share of the general funding from the national government. Eventually, state governments are beholden to Washington, leaving state officials with limited resistance in policy formulation and implementation. Personally, I believe that the federal government has taken the lead in steering state politics towards national fronts. Despite the dominance of state sovereignty in formulation and adoption of state policies, it is acknowledgeable that federal supremacy often lurks behind any important initiative passed by each US state. For example in October 2013, California was under threat from the federal government concerning education policies in the state. California state officials exercised their sovereignty by implementing tailor-made testing in schools. However, the testing proposed by California officials failed to comply with federal rules on education (Elysse, 2013). Consequently, federal officials threatened to withhold $15 million in education funds from California, unless the non-compliant policies were tuned to the rhythm of the federal government. Consequently, California caved in under the immense pressure of federal influence in the stateââ¬â¢s education policies. In this regard, I think the federal government champions development and implementation of policies at both the state and national

Tommy Hilfiger The Struggles of an American Fashion Icon Case Study
Tommy Hilfiger The Struggles of an American Fashion Icon - Case Study Example The paper "Tommy Hilfiger The Struggles of an American Fashion Icon" discovers the American Fashion Icon, Tommy Hilfiger. Fashion companies remain relevant as long as they innovate and come up with new designs for their customers. People get easily bored when they simply get the variants of the same thing. For starting, Tommy Hilfiger was innovative and came out with brands that people coveted. However, nearing the end of the 1990s, the company slowed down its rate of innovation, instead focused on distribution, and opening more stores for the existing brands. Other brands came up and overtook the company in terms of both innovation and distribution. The turn of the century has witnessed many new fashion brands coming up to offer customers better clothes at cheaper prices. To survive such a landscape, Tommy Hilfiger needs to seek ways of covering all the loopholes available to its design, supply chain, and pricing models. In design, it should focus on a few brands that are still prof itable in its line of offers. This aspect would allow the company to eliminate wasting time and resources on unprofitable ventures. For the supply chain, the company can seek other ways of taking the clothes to the customers such as using companies specialized in supply chain management. The prices should be reduced a bit to match that of competitors but not to be too low that they cheapen the brand. Furthermore, increasing of influence sphere can also affect the sales, increase the overall companyââ¬â¢s performance.

Paying Collegiate Athletes Essay Example for Free
Paying Collegiate Athletes Essay A college is an educational institution, where students live together under a common set of rules. A college can be said to be a part of the university, which lack degree-awarding powers. Athletes can be said to be a collection of sport events. These sport events involve running, throwing and jumping, and can also be referred to as track or field athletes (Arlott . J, 1975). Athletics is very important in colleges and universities, where its benefits are undeniable. Anyone who is involved in athletics benefits. Athletics as sports teach the college athletes skills and experiences that cannot be taught in the classroom. These same skills are extremely helpful when students are looking for a career. Students who hold positions in the sportââ¬â¢s clubs acquire leadership skills. In sports students participate as a team. They support each other in order to succeed. They are able to learn and practice teamwork, which will assist them in undertaking other activities in their lives. Participation in a sporting event requires the dedication of the participant. Through sport events, students develop a sense of dedication to what they do. The desire to win drives the students to work very hard. They put aside their time and energy to take part in athletics. They later learn how to create desire for something and work hard to attain it. Collegiate athletics are found in numerous countries of the world. College athletics in the United States have the greatest impact and popularity globally. This is due to a large extent of participation. Due to the great importance and benefits that the college athletics offer, sport events continue to grow. There has been a general progression of athletic organizations over time. In recent years, a debate over payment of college athletes has raised concerns. The debate argues whether college athletes should be paid or not. Athletes do not receive any compensation even after the instatement of the collegiate athletics. There has been pressure for college athletes to be paid. On the other hand, another group of people feel that college athletes should not be paid. There are reasons that support the view against payment of college students. More voices are advocating for payment, with convincing reasons. The reasons that support payment of collegiate athletes will be discussed. Implementation of such a move would greatly benefit all the sports participants in colleges. Discussion College athletes need to be paid. One major reason for this is due to the great economic impact that the college athletics create. For example, in the US, college athletics are said to contribute greatly to the American economy. The colleges spend a huge amount of money on their college organizations. The athletes programs in turn generate a large amount of revenue. For example in the sale of tickets and merchandise it would be very fair therefore for college athletes who are major participants in generating revenues, to get a share of it. The athletes who help colleges make a lot of money do not get even the smallest share of it. Some look at this as studentsââ¬â¢ exploitation. They argue that if colleges benefit or make profit off of student athletes then the athletes should be paid since they helped the college make a lot of profit. In the world over, people believe that one should be paid for the work. Just like an employer, employees are paid according to their productivity. It would be very correct therefore to pay college athletes for their productivity in the sport events. In addition to profits that colleges earn from the sports or games themselves schools officials make a lot of money by marketing their team players. For example in USA, college students J. J Redick and Adam Morrison Jerseys have been sold all over the country, bringing in a lot of profits to the college. However, Morrison and Redick do not benefit from the profits earned. This is because they need to protect their status ( Itââ¬â¢s an observation that college officials have no problem making a lot of money for themselves while exploiting ht well known college players. Well known players have their basketball or football jerseys dominate a market. The team officials make money from the sales, while the athlete himself gets nothing ââ¬Å"millions of dollars are made off of video game and jersey sales every year (Jean. M. 2001 ). The players create great marketing opportunities and do not see any money made from the profits. The quality of play in a game is very critical for a future career. Paying college athletes helps in improving the quality of play they display during the major college sports. These games require skills and experience for a player to play well. Students who join professional sport clubs without experience and skills may end up being put on the bench. This limits their ability to gain required experience. This may be as a result of lack of payment if a student plays in a college team. This may ruin the studentââ¬â¢s future sports career. By paying the college athletes, the students are encouraged to play for the college teams for a much longer time. This assists them in acquiring the much needed skills and experience for a future career in sports. Some students are very talented and it only requires practice to perfect their skills. This will also improve the college game because skilled players can remain for much longer. It is considered wrong, for schools to make money off of players, while the players do not benefit at all. When the players are paid, the quality of the college games is improved. This is because it becomes possible to keep borderline professional athletes in the involved colleges. The players can get more money at a professional level due to the already developed skills. Games coaches or officials sometimes demand a lot of time from the players in order to practice. This compromises on the time the players would work or maintain a job. Players who need to support themselves in order to make a living find themselves in a difficult situation. They are ton between participating in the games or working. If the players are paid, they can be able to put aside the required time for practice and participation in the games. It would make it easy for players to become committed in sports while at the same time earning a living. Gaming companies are given the right to use school names and numbers by colleges. The companies use these names and numbers at a fee to the respective college. The players have every right to enjoy money that is made by use of their names and numbers in the college. Players work very hard in sports and games (Athletic Journal. 1987). They commit their time to rain and play at the expense of doing their homework. Though they may balance between the two their fellow classmates who do not participate in games have more time to study than the players. They dedicate their time and energy in ensuring high quality games. Any hardwork and dedication that a person portrays need to be appreciated and recognized. Paying college athletes would fit so well in recognizing the studentââ¬â¢s efforts in the growth of the game. In addition, to recognizing their efforts, players require to be motivated in doing their training and playing. Motivation encourages players to be determined even when they lose in a game (Charles. E. 1954). They keep on the faith and hope that there is always room for improving their skills and quality of the game. Motivation is a great ingredient towards success of players. Sometimes players may lose miserably to another team. The players may become discouraged to play since they may seem to believe that there are no benefits in their participation. The sports officials thereby step in to encourage them and train them to rectify former mistakes that they committed in the past matches. The players require more than just words in order to keep working on their skills. The need to motivate college students to work harder and improve their skills boils down to some way of rewarding them. One of the best ways to reward and encourage players would be by paying them. Any game event exposes the players to risks. One of the major risks that players are exposed to is injury. Players when in the pitch are involved in defending their team against losing while at the same time maximizing their chances of winning. This demand some form of aggressiveness to succeed. Aggressiveness means quick movements, tricky play (skills) and effective defense actions. When a player is doing all this, accidents may occur that lead to body injuries. These injuries may require intensive medical attention and may be very expensive to pay for the medical services. For example some players get fractured bones, broken joints and tissue damage. Some may even have their body organs impaired. Medication and healing of such body ailments may be too expensive for the players especially where no medical cover takes care of such accidents. The medical expenses may become an economic burden to the player and family. Paying the players, would therefore play a very big role in easing up of such a burden. It makes it easy for students to get the right medication if injured. Any college trains students on how to acquire skills and knowledge and apply them. Teamwork creates a spirit of working together towards success. This spirit is built by organizations and sport clubs in a college. The sport teams and clubs give the students a spirit to be one to work together and to support each other. A good example is the support students give their own team when playing. There is cheering and encouragement from their fellow students who are spectating. Winning a game gives the college students a spirit of victory or conquering especially if the team wins against a well re-known stronger team. This kind of spirit need to be maintained and encouraged in colleges. Maintaining the quality of game through players in order to keep this spirit burning needs a sacrifice. A sacrifice on the sports organizationââ¬â¢s or officials may clearly translate into paying of the players. The spirit lives on. Colleges appreciate and recognize good players during the sports events. College students spend a lot of money on ticket in order to go and watch their own team play as well as showing their solidarity with the team. College athletes encourage community participation. The community that surrounds the college joins students in major sports events and offers their support. The community identifies the college team as belonging to them. Studentsââ¬â¢ parents come in big numbers to support their children in the sports events (Patricia. A. 2007). The students and the community are able to interact with each other, which creates good relationship between the students and the neighborhood. This promotes harmony and peaceful living in and outside the college. Supporting college athletes consequently results to support of community participation. Paying athletes is the greatest form of support that the players can get. Lack of community participation affects the relationship of students and the community itself. Community participation also encourages community service. The students are able to develop community service programs and later undertake activities that help the community in which they live in for example, cleaning exercises, organizing community programs funds rising and even providing support to disaster victims. This is a great way in which students can show support for the community. As earlier stated, community service will be developed in students, if they have a chance to interact and identify the needs of the community. Interaction through events offers a chance for the students to create a good relationship with the community. One way to encourage community service will be through support of college athletics . Paying the students/players may be just one of the effective ways to support athletics. Sometimes an argument is given that college athletes get scholarships. Therefore they have already been paid for their participation and efforts in games. However, other students benefit from scholarships without necessarily participating in the games. Paying college athletes will be a great way to promote justice in the student fraternity. Players feel that they have a right to be rewarded for their efforts. This may even encourage talented students who are discouraged to participate to change their mind and utilize their talents in athletics. In conclusion, college athletics are very important. These games should be given the seriousness they deserve. The players on the other hand need to be motivated for their hardwork and dedication. They deserve to be rewarded. Exploitation of college players by the officials or companies need to be stopped. All these measures require payment to the players and players will feel that justice is done to them. The spirit of college athletics will continue growing and so the future career of players.

Honesty is the Best Policy Essay -- Literary Analysis, Cofer, Ephron,
Henry Louis Mencken said, ââ¬Å"It is hard to believe that a man is telling the truth when you know that you would lie if you were in his place.â⬠Under most circumstances people in the world today would lie before they tell the true. I believe people would rather stretch the truth, than be honest with themselves and with others. Judith Ortiz Cofer, Nora Ephron, and Eric Schlosser, demonstrate honesty throughout their essays. Coferââ¬â¢s essay ââ¬Å"The Story of My Bodyâ⬠is an autobiography focusing on her childhood; how she honestly felt about herself growing up. She was truthful about her skin color; she did not try to enrich her skin color to improve the essay. ââ¬Å"White,â⬠â⬠blancaâ⬠is what Cofer was identified as in Puerto Rico growing up (Cofer 324). Being different growing up is difficult and intimidating, but she was honest with herself and accepted who she was. Cofer was honest about her size ââ¬Å"I was 4F, skinny, short, bespectacledâ⬠is how Cofer honestly explains her stature, and honestly tells the readers that her nickname was ââ¬Å"shrimpâ⬠(326, 327). Being honest, lead Cofer to realize she had knowledge, which is more important than achieving an A in physical education class. This allowed her to discover who she was, which helped her become an honest person. Finally, Coferââ¬â¢s honesty about her ââ¬Å"looksâ⬠helps portray a picture of confusion of growing up. In Puerto Rico she was ââ¬Å"rewarded for being bonita, pretty,â⬠but in ââ¬Å"main stream world of schoolâ⬠she was just ââ¬Å"presentableâ⬠(Cofer 328, 329). Being honest with herself allowed her to represent her class, she did not over dress; she dressed ââ¬Å"neatlyâ⬠(Cofer 329). Her honesty throughout her childhood, allowed her to become the type of person she is today. Ephronââ¬â¢s essay ââ¬Å"The Boston Photographe... ...e bacteriaââ¬â¢s have made it across America in their foods (Schlosser 496). The advertisement of large corporations ââ¬Å"aggressively market to childrenâ⬠and children can be affected by contaminated meat easier than an adult (Schlosser 496). The rise of the fast food corporations has honesty began the devastation of economic decline in the United States. Honesty can be hard to find in someone, the fact is people will lie before telling the truth. It is difficult to understand that the honesty in a novel or article can be more entertaining than a fictional tale. The three essays by Judith Ortiz Cofer, Nora Ephron, and Eric Schlosser, portrayed how honesty overcomes dishonesty. Writing about personnel events in life, or about a company destroying America, or even how other people become angry with something you have done, it is still the best policy to be honest.

A+P vs Araby
Araby and A&P are both short stories, written by famous authors. Although they were written in different times, as well as in different countries, they have many similarities. These similarities can be found both in their contexts and their settings. Both stories are about young men, leading dull lives, and who go through a major change by the end of the story, while trying to get away from their lives. In both stories this change takes place while trying to please a female who triggers something inside them, causing them to act.Araby and A&P are stories of unsuccessful attempts to escape from ordinary lives, only in different ways. What catches the readersââ¬â¢ attention in both stories first, are the settings. In both stories the protagonists describe the neighborhoods and the daily life in the cities that they live in, in detail. While they make these descriptions, telling the reader about the neighborhood through their eyes, they also give information about their mindscapes, a nd we understand what they think of the places they live in. The boy in Araby uses many negative words while describing the setting. ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëâ⬠¦ ninhabitedâ⬠¦ blind endâ⬠¦ detachedâ⬠¦ imperturbableâ⬠¦ darkâ⬠¦ muddy ( pg 427)ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ That is how we empathize with him: being able to picture the dullness and the gloominess of that city in Ireland, and also its detachedness from other places. Similarly, Sammy in A&P describes the town he lives in by referring to everyone around him as sheep, vividly describing the distinction between the beach and his town, which causes us to again picture a small town with many mostly older people who lead uneventful lives, and a young boy who has lived there and worked in the same shop all his life. ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦ all three of them went up to the cat-and-dog-food-breakfast-cereal-macaroni-rice-raisins-seasonings-spreads-spaghetti-soft drinks-crackers-and-cookies aisle. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢(pg 865) In this way we know that both characters are not happy with the lives they are leading. They have no ambitions and nothing to hold on to. Everything they talk about sounds too simple. With nothing to hold on to, both characters are in search of something that will give them the courage to do something different, something that will spice up their lives. For the boy in Araby, the escape from his boring everyday life comes with his love for a girl. She is the only light in his dark life, his only source for joy. He devotes himself to this girl so much that she becomes a god-like figure. ââ¬Ëââ¬ËThe light from the lamp caught the white curve on her neck, lit up her hair that rested there and, falling, lit up the hand upon the railing. (pg 429)ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ The same thing happens to Sammy when the three girls in bathing suits come into the store that he is working at. The leading girl of the group, who he calls ââ¬ËQueenyââ¬â¢, is different from everyone he knows in the town.He is fascinated by her. ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦ just her, this clean bare plane of the top of her chest down from the shoulder bones like a dented sheet of metal tilted in the light. I mean, it was more than pretty. (pg 865)ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ The girl is the long-awaited lights in Sammyââ¬â¢s life. Since they are fascinated by these girls so much, the boys canââ¬â¢t stand their being sad. The girl in Araby is sad because she is not able to go to a festival that she wants to go to, where as ââ¬ËQueenieââ¬â¢ is sad because she has been scolded in front of everyone by the manager of the market. The boys, finally having found something to fight for. They feel themselves as their saviors. The boy in Araby feels like it is his duty and responsibility to make the girl happy. ââ¬Ëââ¬ËI imagined that I bore my chalice safely through a throng of foes. (pg 428)ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ In the same way, Sammy in A&P quits his job, thinking he is now the girlââ¬â¢s hero, who stood up against his boss to save he r from the embarassment. ââ¬Ëââ¬ËSo I say ââ¬ËI quitââ¬â¢ to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping theyââ¬â¢ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero. pg 868)ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ It is not long before both of them realize that it was not actually worth it, and that what they had imagined werenââ¬â¢t actually true. The boy realizes that he is not capable of doing what he was trying to do. He is too young to be buying a gift with the little money he has, from a big bazaar, and for a girl much older that he is. Sammy realizes that in reality he can not do anything else other than to be a cashier at a supermarket. They both understand that they were not actually who they thought they were. The boy in Araby was never going to be the lover of the girl he loved, and Sammy was never the girlsââ¬â¢ hero. After these realizations they both find themselves in an emptiness, having suddenly lost the mission of their lives. The boy is angry with himself (I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger(pg 431)) and Sammy doesnââ¬â¢t know what to do next. ââ¬Ëââ¬ËMy stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter. (pg 869)ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ But they both know it is going to be

The Great Gatsby2 essays
The Great Gatsby2 essays The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitsgerald, is about the American Dream, and the downfall of those who attempt to reach its imaginative goals. The attempt to capture the American Dream is common in many novels. This dream is different for fidderent people, but in The Great Gatsby, for Jay, the dream is that through wealth and power, one can acquire happiness. To get this happiness Jay must reach into the past and relive an old dream and in order to do this he must have wealth and power. Jay Gatsby, the main character of the story , is a character who longs for the past. Suprisingly he devotes most of his adult life trying to recapture it and, finally, dies in its pursuit. In the past, Jay had a love affair with the extravagant Daisy. Knowing he could not marry her because of the difference in their social status, he leaves her to obtain wealth to reach her high standards. Once he acquires this wealth, he moves near to Daisy, "Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay," and throws extravagant parties, happen,he asks around casually if anyone knows her. Soon he meet Nick Carraway, a cousin of Daisy, who agrees to set up a meeting, "He wants to know... if you'll invite Daisy, who agrees to set up a meeting, "He wants to know...if you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over." Gatsby's personal dream symbolizes the larger American Dream where all have the opportunity to get what they want. Later, as we see in the Plaza Hotel, Jay still believes that Daisy loves him. He is convinced of this as is shown when he takes the blame for Myrtle's death. "Was Daisy driving?" "Yes...but of course I'll say I was." He also watches and protects Daisy as she returns home. "How long are you going to wait?" "All night if necessary. "Jay cannot accept that the past is gone and done with. Jay is sure that he can capture his dream with wealth an ...

French Passive Voice â⬠La voix passive
French Passive Voice - La voix passive Voice is a grammatical term which indicates the relationship between a subject and verb. There are three different voices in French and English. In the passive voice, the action described by the verb is being done to the subject by an agent, which is usually introduced by one of two prepositions:1. When the verb expresses an action, the agent is introduced by the preposition par:Active voiceà à à David fait le mà ©nage.à à à David is doing the housework.Passive voiceà à à Le mà ©nage est fait par David.à à à The housework is done by David.Active voiceà à à Lise lit le livre.à à à Lise is reading the book.Passive voiceà à à Le livre est lu par Lise.à à à The book is read by Lise.2. When the verb expresses a state of being,à the agent is either introduced by de or left out entirely:Active voiceà à à Tout le monde le respecte.à à à Everyone respects him.Passive voiceà à à Il est respectà © de tout le monde.à à à He is respected by everyone.à à à Il est à ©minemment respectà ©.à à à He is highly respected.Active voiceà à à Mes amis aiment ma mà ¨re. à à à My friends love my mother.Passive voiceà à à Ma mà ¨re est aimà ©e de mes amis.à à à My mother is loved by my friends. How to Conjugate the French Passive Voice The passive voice is formed with the conjugated verbà à ªtreà theà past participle. The past participle has to agree with the subject, not the agent, in gender and number, just likeà à ªtre verbsà in theà passà © composà ©Ã (more about agreement):à à à Le livre est à ©crit par des lycà ©ens.à à à The book is written by high schoolers.à à à La vaisselle est faiteà par Henri.à à à The dishes are done by Henri.à à à Les enfants sont nourrisà par Luc.à à à The kids are fed by Luc. To use the French passive voice in any other tense or mood, just conjugateà à ªtreà accordingly: Active voice Passive voice prsent Anne fait la tarte.Anne makes the pie. La tarte est faite par Anne. The pie is made by Anne. pass compos Anne a fait la tarte.Anne made the pie. La tarte a t faite par Anne. The pie was made by Anne. imparfait Anne faisait la tarte.Anne was making the pie. La tarte tait faite par Anne. The pie was being made by Anne. futur Anne fera la tarte.Anne will make the pie. La tarte sera faite par Anne. The pie will be made by Anne. subjonctif Je veux quAnne fasse la tarte. I want Anne to make the pie. Je veux que la tarte soit faite par Anne.I want the pie to be made by Anne. How to Useà the French Passive Voice Now that you know about prepositions and agents and how to conjugate the passive voice, its on to more practical matters. The French passive voice may be used for two reasons:A)à To put more emphasis on the person or thing performing the action:Active:à Un enfant a à ©crit ce livre.à - A child wrote this book.Passive:à Ce livre a à ©tà © à ©crit par un enfant.à - This book was written by a child.B)à To focus on an action without identifying the performer:à à à à Jean a à ©crit ce livre.à - Jean wrote this book.à à à vsà à à à Il a à ©tà © à ©crit en 1927.à - It was written in 1927. How to Avoid the French Passive Voice The French passive voice has a slightly formal orà literaryà tone and is used less frequently than in English. There are several alternatives to the passive voice (besides the active voice): A)à To focus on the performer, useà cest:à à à à Ce livre a à ©tà © à ©crit par un enfant. Cest un enfant qui a à ©crit ce livre.à à à This book was written by a child. Its a child who wrote this book.à à à à Le record a à ©tà © battu par une femme. Cest une femme qui a battu le record.à à à The record was beaten by a woman. Its a woman who beat the record.B)à To avoid identifying the performer, there are two options:à à à à 1.à On (impersonal subject pronoun)à à à à Ce livre a à ©tà © à ©crit en 1927. On a à ©crit ce livre en 1927.à à à This book was written in 1927.à à à à Ils ont à ©tà © pardonnà ©s. On les a pardonnà ©s.à à à They have been excused.à à à à 2.à Se (passive reflexive)à à à à Ce livre est souvent lu. Ce livre se lit souvent.à à à This book is often read.à à à à Les mà »res ne sont pas vendues ici. Les mà »res ne se vendent pas ici.à à à Blackberries arent sold here.

Policy-making process Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Policy-making process - Essay Example At this stage, the makers select the policy tools to use to address the problem after the enactment (Birkland 26). The enactment implies the passage of the law and issuance of regulation that take a particular course to solve the problem. Reaching the formal decision leads the implementation stage. Publicizing the policy is critical in the implementation stage. The policymakers create statements that consist of clear parameters including the targets, conditions, and restrictions (Birkland 27). Evaluation is the last stage in the policymaking process, and results of the assessment provide feedback to the process. The members can decide to change or create a new policy. The Immigration Policy in the United States typifies the five stages of policy-making policy. The policy has attracted spirited debates, and key citizens, including the president call for changes in immigration policy. The formation of the Immigration Policy dates back in 1924 although various reforms have taken place after the evaluation stage of the policy-making process. The policy-makers identified that illegal immigrants of African and Asian origin were getting into the United States in enormous numbers (Renwick and Lee). The natives were extremely hostile towards the immigrants. Hence, the identification stage intended to control the influx of the immigrants. After the identification of the immigrants menace in US, the policymakers brainstormed on the methods to control the entry of the immigrants to the US. The proponents suggested that the immigrants provided cheap labor while opponents contended the aliens posed a threat to the job market. The policymakers set restrictions on the immigrants and established methods of banning the immigrants from the Asian continent. The policymakers settled for the enactment of the laws to govern the immigration. The best alternative imposed limits on the influx of immigrants, especially
